Battle of the Atom is an upcoming 10-part comic book crossover event published by Marvel Comics that is scheduled to debut in September 2013 and will run through multiple X-Books.
The story will involve the X-Men of the Future traveling to present time in order to force the All New X-men to return to their rightful time, as their presence in the current timeline will result in disastrous consequences.
Battle of the Atom was announced in April 2013. Brian Michael Bendis, writer of All-New X-Men, said "X-Men is a lot about legacy, and where are we going and what are we getting, so this is the perfect story to examine all of that". Also, Bendis said that the outcome of "Battle of the Atom" will involve a significant status quo shift — for his books, All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, in particular — and that those involved are looking to play up what they like about crossovers like this, and avoid what they don't.
Hank McCoy brought the Original X-Men into the present in the hopes of changing the course of history and stopping Scott Summer’s mutant revolution before it even begins. But as the young and confused X-Men try to cope with their devastating futures, the team begins to unravel from the inside. And just as mutant civil war is about to hit its boiling point, an unexpected third party comes in to change the game—the future X-Men! They’ve traveled back in time with a warning—the original X-Men need to go back to their rightful time or they will be the final nail in mutantkind’s coffin. They risked everything to come to the past and won’t leave until the All-New X-Men are back in the past.
